Celebrate Women this March!

The idea for an International Women’s Day arose around the turn of the 20th century out of a long-standing movement for women to participate equally in society. The first International Women’s Day was observed on March 19, 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. That day, more than one million women and men showed their support by participating in public events. Between 1913 and 1917, women elsewhere in Europe began to celebrate the day as well.

Over time, International Women’s Day has grown to become a global day of recognition and celebration. Today, International Women’s Day is a national holiday in many countries and celebrated in many more. Canada chose March 8 as International Women’s Day.

Worldwide, women continue to contribute to social, economic, cultural and political achievements and International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on progress of women. It is also the day to call for change and to honor acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played a role in the history of their countries and communities. The day aims to highlight the importance of creating conditions for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls and for their full and equal participation in social development.

This year’s International Women’s Day 2017 campaign #BeBoldForChange asks for a more inclusive gender equal world. Be Bold For Change asks the world to take bold actions that truly drives the greatest change for women. Each of us can be a leader within our own circle of influence and take bold action to accelerate gender equality. Information on taking the pledge can be found at:

The Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society honors the belief that being treated with dignity and respect should not depend on whether one is male or female and that every woman has the right to be treated with dignity. We understand that when women are empowered, they immeasurably improve the lives of everyone around them. On March 8th, the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society will endorse the campaign #BeBoldForChange and ask that you join us in unity for all the women in your lives and take action to help achieve gender equality. Staff and volunteers will be around town celebrating the day, if you see us, please stop by and say hello! Happy International Women’s Day to all the remarkable women in our community!
